you can speed things up greatly, at the cost of denars, by just buying and selling them to the same town over and over. go to a town, ideally one with a shortage. horse tab. sell all. close trade. open trade. go to horse tab. buy all. close trade. open trade. horse tab. sell all. and repeat. over and over.
I'm not sure if anyone has tested it yet. in 1.7.1, you can just do horse trade. the margins are far superior to others. or, you can sit in a town and just buy all the horses, sell all the horses, over and over. it costs like 20k or so every time, but you will skill up trade. if you have 2mill or so, you can just brute force it this way

Levels trade pretty quickly. 20 Aserai warhorses will cost ~16k, but can net >40k. Over time there are more lucrative commodities, but those are the best per trade. And you can be doing the other trading at the same time (buying salt and dates down south, hogs and wood up north)
A shorter sword would likely be your best option, and maybe some throwing knives. Get a mace, raid, sell captives. It says on the skill how to level it up if you click on the "i" at the top right. But the 'best way' I level it up, is just selling off as many prisoners as I can, usually excluding lords.
